Emergence profile and restorative angle
Synopsys:
Can a few degrees make the difference between long-term success and biological complications? This lecture explores how the implant emergence restorative angle and crown contour influence the biological response around dental implants. Drawing on the latest evidence, the lecture will present a series of randomised controlled trials and pre-clinical studies led by the speaker, examining the biological consequences of a wide emergence restorative angle and overly convex implant-supported crowns. Finally, practical restorative strategies to minimise these risks and optimise long-term biological and aesthetic outcomes will be discussed.
BIO:
Franz J. Strauss | DDS, MDentSci, MSc (Oxon), PhD
Dr Franz Strauss graduated from the University of Finis Terrae, Chile, in 2010. He completed his specialist training in Periodontics at the University of Valparaíso in 2014 and obtained a Master of Science from the University of Chile in 2015. In 2017, he moved to Europe to pursue a PhD in Applied Medical Science at the Medical University of Vienna, which he completed in 2023. During this period, he relocated to Switzerland, where he lived and worked for seven years at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry, University of Zurich, progressing from Research Assistant to Senior Lecturer under the leadership of Professor Ronald Jung. As part of his postgraduate training, he subsequently moved to Oxford, United Kingdom, where he completed a Master of Science in Evidence-Based Health Care and Medical Statistics at the University of Oxford in 2025. Following the completion of his master’s degree, he returned to the University of Zurich before relocating to Sydney, Australia, where he currently serves as Senior Lecturer in Periodontology at the University of Sydney.
Dr Strauss’s research focuses on oral regeneration and implant dentistry, with a particular emphasis on translating high-quality evidence into patient- and clinician-centred clinical practice. He has designed and conducted basic, preclinical, and clinical research, resulting in more than 130 publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
He serves as Section Editor for Implantology at the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, is an active reviewer for several leading journals in periodontology and implant dentistry, and has contributed two chapters to the latest edition of Lindhe’s Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. He also co-led the methodology underpinning the first Global Consensus for Clinical Cractice Guidelines (GCCG) for the rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla.
Throughout his career, Dr Strauss has received numerous scholarships and competitive research grants, serving as principal investigator or co-investigator on projects funded by organisations including the International Team for Implantology (ITI), the Oral Reconstruction Foundation, the Osteology Foundation, and the Geistlich-Stucki Foundation. In 2026, he received the André Schroeder Research Prize from the International Team for Implantology (ITI), recognising the best clinical research publication in implant dentistry. He was also named among the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% most-cited scientists worldwide in 2025 and 2026.
